The History of Tigard Christian ChurchTigard Christian Church’s existence is based around it’s belief that people need a church that is founded solely on the Bible and community. We desire to have our teaching based on the Bible and not any one particular individual or group. Our body began when several families began meeting together in a building off Pacific Highway in Tigard (behind the current Fred Meyer building) in July, 1959. The group officially became Villa Ridge Christian Church in September of that year. The church planting organization, North Willamette Christian Evangelistic Association selected Roy Lawson, a 21-year-old student from Northwest Christian College in Eugene, OR to be the first minister. The church quickly grew to the point that a larger facility was needed. The current property at Hall and O’Mara, a former filbert orchard, was purchased and a new building constructed in 1963. Upon moving to the new facility, the congregation was renamed Tigard Christian Church. The facility has had two major expansions: a new sanctuary in the mid 1980’s and the addition of an education wing in the mid-1990’s. Through the years the church has gone through many successes and stresses. The church has historically had a large commitment to foreign mission work. In recent years we have tried to add to that a strong commitment to service and outreach that is more local. Our ministries to children and youth have historically been very strong, and continue so to this day. In recent years we have added ministries such as Stephen Ministry to equip the body of the church to better minister to one another. The church has had only five preaching ministers in its almost 50-year existence. Come and join us as together we create an even better history of this church making an impact for Christ in this community. |
